August Programming | Gymnastics, Squat Endurance, Rowing

Welcome to the last month of summer 2024! As we head into August, Urban Athletic Club is excited to present new dynamic and engaging programming themes that will push your limits and elevate your fitness journey. This month, we’re diving deep into the Level Method LIT (Levels, Intent, Themes) programming philosophy, focusing on key areas to help you achieve your goals and have a blast along the way.

Themes for August

  1. Electricity Discipline: Gymnastics
  • This month, our Electricity Discipline focuses on Gymnastics. We’ll explore movements like inversions, rings, pull-ups, ring rows, pistol squats, and other bodyweight exercises. Mastering these skills not only improves strength and flexibility but also enhances body awareness and coordination. Gymnastics movements are the bedrock of athletic development, making them essential for all levels. You probably won’t make the 2028 Olympics, but you’ll be ready just in case!
  1. System: Ventilation
  • Get ready to test and improve your endurance with this month’s ventilation focus. Workouts will emphasize aerobic capacity, featuring lighter weights and longer durations to challenge your cardiovascular system. This is your chance to enhance stamina and endurance, crucial components for a well-rounded fitness regimen.
  1. Progression: 20 Rep Back Squats
  • We’ll continue building off our previous strength work with a progression focus on 20 rep Back Squats. The 20-rep Back Squat is a challenging stamina series that balances strength and address asymmetries with sets of Bulgarian Split Squats and improves muscular endurance when moving to the 20-rep Back Squat. Expect to maximize your consistency to ensure steady progress.
  • Virtuosity: Dumbbell/Unilateral
  • Virtuosity is about performing the common movements uncommonly well. In August we will focus on Dumbbell work with a Unilateral focus (one-arm/one-leg). As much as fitness is about achieving strength and body composition changes, leaning and perfecting movements allows athletes to gain more knowledge in the fitness arena.
  1. Fun Workouts: Submissions from Other Level Method Gyms
  • To keep things fresh and exciting, we’ll feature fun workouts submitted by other Level Method Affiliate gyms around the world. This is a fantastic way to experience diverse training styles and challenge yourself with unique routines.
  1. Assessments: Rowing, Squat Endurance, Upper/Lower Endurance
  • Our assessments this month will test your skills in Rowing, squats, and upper/lower endurance.
  • The Rowing assessment, often the most mentally challenging, will be a 10 to 20-minute row. To make this exciting, we’re introducing a monthly rowing challenge with rewards for those who participate in the extra credit sessions.
  • The Squat Endurance assessment ties into the Electricity Discipline theme, so expect to make a level up!
  • The Upper and Lower endurance assessments will build on your previous deadlift work, helping you gauge progress and set new goals.

Importance of Gymnastics

Gymnastics movements are foundational for any athlete, enhancing strength, coordination, and agility. Whether you’re performing inversions, rings, pull-ups, or pistol squats, mastering these skills will translate to improved performance in all areas of fitness. They require minimal equipment, making them accessible and versatile. The discipline and focus required to excel in gymnastics will also help you in other workouts and aspects of life.

We encourage all members to attend classes consistently, at least twice or three times per week. This regularity is crucial for seeing improvement and reaching your fitness goals. Knowing your current level and setting clear objectives for the month’s assessments will help you stay motivated and focused.
